What is Fashion?
Fashion is a term that encompasses the current trends in clothing, makeup and hair. It is a way of expressing oneself through what they wear, and can give others an idea of their personality. It is important for some people to keep up with the latest fashions, while others find it more fun to be original and create their own style.
The word fashion means a “prevailing custom or style of dress, manners or behavior.” It is similar to the terms mode and fad, which also imply a popular trend. The defining characteristic of fashion is that it changes constantly.
It is hard to pinpoint exactly when a change in fashion begins. Often times, it starts with a small group of people and then moves through society until everyone is following the same trend. For example, jeans made by Levi’s were once popular among miners because the copper rivets helped them last longer in a rough work environment. This led to their popularity and eventually spread to the entire country.
There are many factors that contribute to a change in fashion. One of the biggest factors is time and seasons. For example, when summer arrives it is typical for people to start wearing light colored clothes. Then as fall and winter approach it is common for people to begin wearing darker colors such as blacks and grays.
Another factor is the influence of the media. TV shows, movies, and magazine advertisements can all influence what people choose to wear. These influences can be subtle or dramatic. It is important for people to keep in mind that fashion is a reflection of the society and culture that they live in.
